How to Trap a Squirrel

The Telegraph, By Harry Wallop, Consumer Affairs Editor - 17 Jun 2010

Bunny Guinness, the Gardener's Question Time panellist recommends using traps to kill squirrels, with the Kania 2000 as her favourite device. Here are a few tips about how to get rid of the pests without breaking the law.

1. Any grey squirrel trapped cannot be released back into the wild, because it is not an indigenous specie to Britain. Therefore any trapped have to be killed – either by the trap itself or afterwards.

2. Any trap must be set so that it will not harm other protected animals, such as birds. This means any squirrel trap should be laid in a tunnel, or under bark. The Kania 2000 needs to be put under a tunnel.

3. The best time of year for trapping grey squirrels is between March and September, when their natural food is scarce.

4. Peanut butter or whole maize seeds are the best bait to entice the squirrel into the trap.

5. The WCS Tube Trap, recommended by professional trappers, comes already with a tube to protect it harming other wildlife.

7. You can shoot a grey squirrel. It has no season because it is classed as vermin, though it is illegal to fire a shotguns in a built-up area. Bunny Guinness recommends an air rifle as a good weapon.

8. It is possible to poison a squirrel, but most experts believe this is the least successful method Warfarin 01009 is the only poison bait allowed by law to be used on Grey Squirrels. It can only be used by a trained pest control worker and between March 15 and August 15.
